As much as we love the Super Bowl and all things pigskin in the Hendrickson household (and trust me, we did a blow-out party and I got REALLY passionate about the Pats win), the end of football season means we get to go crazy for another pastime: basketball.
My oldest son LOVES basketball, and for this week, I have a story of supreme determination and sacrifice . . . okay, that may be over-hyping it, but it IS a story about how I had to hustle and get uncomfortable to find an answer to a family dilemma. And it all starts with my son’s basketball team.
I’m hoping it will help you with a challenge you may have in your personal life—or your business. Sometimes we just need to give ourselves a little “push” to get results.
A small shift for me made all the difference. Discover what it was in the video.
Make sure to leave me a comment below the video! I’d love to hear where you were stuck and how you got a little uncomfortable to make progress.

Hi Pam, good message about getting out of your comfort zone. But there was one underlying message for John, that wasn’t really brought out and that was in life, there will sometimes be setbacks. And while these setbacks may not be fair, they give us a chance to refocus our efforts to do better or improve our “game so to speak,” so that we can again get to that next level and beyond. Because, its not the winning that builds character but the setbacks and hard work it took to get there. That’s what builds character. Remember, that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school team but look what he achieved.
Pam Hendrickson says
Tony, such a great point. My husband and I had a similar conversation which is that the setbacks can be good. It’s so easy to want everything to go perfectly for your child and yet that’s not only not possible, it’s not what’s going to serve him as he grows up. THanks for teh reminder! I’ll share the Michael Jordan example with our son as well!

Pam great post and lesson. I was most impressed by your camera presence and animation while speaking. It is a critical component, I believe, to presenting/selling effectively with a video. Do/did you practice, have a coach or just a natural :-D? Thanks. Mike
Pam Hendrickson says
Michael, you are sweet! I wish I could say I knew what to do naturally…I have had a lot of practice and training. First, spending 18 years working with Tony Robbins didn’t hurt as I got to see first hand what quality preparation and compelling delivery looked like! I have done a lot of coaching since with both my business partner, Mike Koenigs, and storytelling expert, Bo Eason who is an UNBELIEVABLE speaking and presentation coach. I think the biggest thing is practice, record yourself, watch it (which can be painful sometimes! ;)), and keep going. The more natural and authentic you can be, the better! I appreciate your comment – thanks again.

Pam, I loved your video. As a coach of mulitple youth sports for 28 years and the author of “Building Champions – 7 Success Principles for Youth Sports and the Game of Life” the life lessons that you shared about business are wonderful. A very valuable lesson that can be shared for other youth, your family and your followers is that the setback that your son had is an extremely wonderful life lesson for him also. As I coach youth my feelings are that a lost or the experience your son has endured is really a Learning experience, as this lesson like that of loosing a game is really the opportunity that the child has EARNED (learned minus the L) the opportunity to learn from the experiance and use it as the motivational source to work harder to achieve what is best for them and help find the “who” they really are as a person. It helps them find the path of how, when and where they will find their real passion in life. Many life lessons can be taught to youth though sports so the have the tools, skills and insights to survive in the “Game of Life”. Setbacks in sports for youth are the exact same as what adults will face in many facets of our lifes. As Tony always say’s the power of questions are vital, ask your son what he can learn from this kind of situation. He will GROW substantially from this!!!!! Along with having very loving and caring parents he will overcome this in ways that will show outside from the game. Good Luck!!! Again great message. Thank you for all you do!!! I’m so gratefull to be able to follow people like yourself.
Pam Hendrickson says
Jeff, if only there were more coaches like you! I appreciate your perspective immensely and agree, asking empowering questions is incredibly important. I love the distinction between “learn” and “earn” too – both are important! It’s amazing how humbling being a parent is (the one thing that’s even more humbling than being a business owner! :)) – and I cherish all the learning experiences for my husband and me, too. Hopefully, our kids will continue to do a good job raising us… Thanks for doing what you do!

Pam, I love the message in this video. I have a couple of responses. The first is for your son John (since you started out talking about his love for basketball).
John, practice dribbling and long shots. I’m only 5’2″ as an adult female, so I was pretty short when I was your age. However, I played basketball all through school. There’s an advantage to being short if you have dribbling mastered: you can steal the ball from the giants and head for home court. Learn to pass and practice those long shots. The big guys will thwart a lay-up, but they won’t be expecting you to shoot from half court! Go get ’em, tiger!!
Pam, I have a hard time with marketing. I know my business will not grow without getting my face out there, so I’m taking baby steps to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve been sending out cold emails and devoting at least two full days per week to reaching out. I have a wonderful business coach who touches base with me every Wednesday, via phone. We go over what I’ve implemented, what the outcomes are, and what I plan on doing for the upcoming week. We brainstorm together to come up with marketing solutions that fit my personality.
As the result, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone and am more psyched about moving forward. I still have many steps to take in order to become more aggressive in my marketing endeavors, but having someone by my side, who also holds me accountable, is a godsend. Being self-employed and working from home – with no human contact – can and does affect motivation. Having a cheerleader in my corner has made a tremendous difference.
Pretty soon I’ll be able to outwit those big kids and go in for the lay-up!

I love this message Shauna – and kudos to you! (My grandmother used to say “short people are short because we have brains that weigh us down” – of course nana was 4′ 11″ – but she was an amazing woman and lived to be almost 98!). The best thing you said in your message (besides being psyched about moving forward) is that you are taking baby steps to get out of your comfort zone, especially as it relates to marketing. Having a coach is such a good idea in this area especially. The truth is I think almost everyone struggles with marketing at first. But the people who succeed (meaning they get out there, they make a difference and they generate income as a result) are those who understand that the big shift comes from going from “doer” to “marketer” and they keep at it. Kudos to you and thanks, again, for the share.

Thanks for some great inspiration. I don’t open every email I get, but you got me over here this time and I enjoyed the video and have shared it with a couple of others. Been trying to liquidate out of a current business so I can regenerate and move into what I’ve been planning from things I’ve learned from you and Mike. It’s been so so slow in my current business which has somehow put me into burn out mode. I need to heed what you are saying and move on out of this current trap.
Thanks again for your positive thoughts!
Pam Hendrickson says
Ken, thanks for your post. Change can be such a good thing as it completely breaks our pattern and allows us to start fresh. Take heart – we have ALL been there – truly – and that’s why we need to be here to support each other in the process. Stay in touch and let us know how we can help!

Thank you Pam for your encouragement. I am so relieve that I have discovered how to access your blog and emails. You may be relieved to know that I have not been procrastinating, there are others out there who have set up free training for people like me, however, I was waiting for our Brand to follow the right direction
I did a live training with Profit workshop, train with Eben Pagan, Lisa, John, Sonia, etc. When I saw your Getting Started Information and other downloads it was most inspiring. I downloaded 208 pages of Make Market Launch IT. Please keep me accountable.
