I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Video content is one of the fastest ways to connect authentically with your audience.
But if you’re not comfortable in front of the lens, it’s not going to work for you.
But what if you could be the Steph Curry of video marketing? You don’t get to be “the greatest shooter in NBA history” by accident. The Golden State Warriors guard doesn’t just walk out onto the basketball court and crush it.
Curry has a specific warmup routine. He dribbles two basketballs at once, takes over 100 shots, practices one-on-one drills and even takes “tunnel shots” from the hallway connecting the locker rooms to the court. And that’s not to mention the practice sessions he does with the team.
It’s not just limited to sports, either. Any top performer will tell you that preparation makes the difference between peak performance and falling flat.
So when you create a business video, what’s YOUR prep routine?
This week, I’m going to share my video content prep tips—gleaned from over 25 years of trial and error. With these tips, you’ll be all warmed up to walk on camera and film like a video content marketing rockstar.
I’ve got some quick video content marketing prep tips for you—and video time codes in case you want to dive in deeper!
What do you need to get into state?
I use a “power playlist” that I put on in my car when I drive to a speaking engagement. Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders plays Madden NFL on Xbox. What rituals can you use to pump yourself up? More at 4:03.
What can you do before you film a business video to make sure your audience sticks around?
Make promises up front and tell your audience exactly what they’ll get out of the training. They need to know the “what’s in it for me?” in the first few seconds so they stick around. Your content structure is a critical part of your pre-video ritual. More at 7:34.
Know what your audience is thinking.
While they’re watching you, your audience is asking themselves these 5 questions. Know them, answer them in your video content and maybe even review them before you get started to put you in the right frame of mind.
- Do these strategies make sense?
- Are they worth my time, energy and focus?
- Who is this person? Is he for real? Is he truly authentic? Can I trust him?
- Can I do it? Will it work? Will it matter?
- What is she giving me that can make a difference right now?
