What I have for you this week, might be one of the most old-fashioned things I’ve recommended. In fact, my kids would probably roll their eyes at me.
But in terms of creating customers for life who come back to you over and over to invest in every product you produce, IT WORKS. I’ll show you what it is in my new video:
Let me know how you feel about using this competitive advantage. Leave me a comment below, and I look forward to hearing your (happy) thoughts!

Wow, great points.
We do wear our emotions.
Always be smiling when speaking on the phone. Have a short script for answering that is welcoming, and make sure you and your staff stick to it. Insist on that smile while answering the phone.
And never go in to negotiations when desperate. You doing want to make desperate decisions. Sharks will eat you alive, and decent customers won’t buy from you if they sense desperation

Mark, such an important point- vital to cultivate a mindset of abundance! Thanks for your share!

Congratulations on your 20 year anniversary!
Great tips:
1. Give with Joy, not just delivering your service or product. Practice a gratitude ritual.
2. Surprise and Delight Tips. Send a personal note, give out awards, create a graduation slide show, recognize special and memorable client events, recognize their accomplishments, and special access to your “insider stuff”.
3. Hire for a positive attitude, within the current legal guidelines. We are in the Happiness delivery business.
Thanks of the shares Pam. Love the Seven Dwarfs story, and gift of Joy.

Love that John! I read this as I’m about to close down my computer to catch a flight to Brisbane, where I’ll be working with a new client for a week. Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

Aloha and mahalo Pam! Great reminder and excellent presentation. Your free suggestions for surprises were great. And even better, the reminder about picking up the phone. Happy Anniversary!

I began my day watching your video this morning. The topic was excellent and your presentation the usual “Pam Dynamic.” Your unique style is always engaging.
For many years I did corporate marketing and strategic consulting. Oftentimes I’d be in a residency situation, spending months inside the corporate offices and culture. I never included customer service training in any of my proposals because most companies don’t think they have “that problem.”
Nine times out of ten, they did. But it almost always began with corporate moral from the top down. Your point about hiring was excellent as it’s so true and so often overlooked. When the employees had low morale the companies were always deficient in customer service.
Your presentation today would fit any small firm to a Fortune 500 company.
Pam Hendrickson says
Thanks Tom! I had the gift of growing up in a Fortune 500 town (Corning, NY) and my dad, who was a project manager, is the first one who started making me aware of these subtle, but critical keys to success! I appreciate your comment as you are so right and it’s a great reminder for all of us – companies big and small! 🙂

I totally agree with these points and have found what a big difference making the extra effort makes in my overall success in my business. Especially giving with joy. This is tough sometimes when you are doing jobs you don’t love. But a lot easy when you are doing things you enjoy.
Something I can add here is based on an experience also in South Africa at the Mangwanani African Spa. I had an amazing experience. Such a treat because every single moment of the 10 hours I spent there was choreographed. They had literally thought out every interaction. I eventually realized that it was systematized so that everyone would receive the same level of attention. Every employee was trained to perform their task (massage etc) in the same way. It was all run on different stations that you moved around to. The whole thing was like clockwork. The result was an amazing experience. It wasn’t just leaving everything up to the whims of the staff. They had been trained to do everything in a very particular way.
Pam Hendrickson says
Love this point Gareth – once you have the right attitudes, you still have to give a very detailed, specific step-by-step system for what an outstanding result looks like when it comes to your clients. Hopefully we’ll get back to SA to check out the Mangwanani at some point! Thanks for your share!

Hi Pam, I have stayed at the One And Only CT and couldn’t agree more, the how is more important than the what. I am definitely going to start employing happy people!
Pam Hendrickson says
John, check out the Palmilla in Baja – it’s AMAZING! Thanks so much for your note – and yes, it will change your life when you filter for happiness! 🙂

Great advice (as usual)! This is something I often lose sight of, especially with difficult clients. As I was watching the video I re-imagined the many delivery opportunities I regularly have with clients, and I realize now that delivering with joy and happiness, even on conference calls and through emails, would make all the difference between a positive experience vs. a negative one for me as well as the client, and put any missing satisfaction back into areas where it might be lacking.
Thanks so much, Pam! This video set the tone for the rest of my day! 🙂
Moneik says
Thank you Pam, love this message. I actually just heard and landed upon you through a recent podcast and really appreciate your message. You seem very genuine and Happy!
Pam Hendrickson says
Thanks Moneik, nice to hear from you!
Susan Burlingame says
Thanks for all of these excellent suggestions. I have received marketing messages that have been delivered from people who have a scarcity, fear-based mindset. Those messages leave me feeling obligated to buy, instead of joyful. It is a great reminder of the privilege we have to thank our customers and always communicate happiness. Pam, it is a privilege to learn from you! Congratulations to you and Chris as you celebrate 20 years of marriage.
P.S. I’ll be visiting the One&Only Cape Town soon, so I’ll give you an update…The Palmilla in Cabo San Lucas is hard to beat!
Pam Hendrickson says
Susan! THanks for your message – just landed from working with a client in Brisbane. The One & Only Cape Town is awesome and I know you’ll have a blast and be well taken care of. As Jim Rohn used to say, “we must stand guard at the door of our minds.” This is true in even managing the messages we let in and see! Look forward to seeing you soon! 🙂

This is a great video Pam! Thank you for those important reminders. That information never gets old! And I love the ending… Hahaha!
